Wink Bingo has had their most recent television ad for their bingo site banned because it shows a healthcare professional ignoring her duties in order to play online bingo on her laptop instead. The midwife nurse is seen playing bingo while an obviously distressed woman is left giving birth without medical assistance and the tag line on the ad reads “find the appropriate moment”.

The Advertising Standards Authority acknowledges that it’s a humour take on a modern life situation but that the ad will not be allowed to run because of the way it has portrayed the nurse as choosing to neglect her duties as a healthcare provider. Spacebar Media, the agency responsible for creating the ad, said that they had attempted to avoid having the ad banned because they believed that they had managed to adhere to the UK’s strict advertising policies that all gaming and gambling companies must live by.

Typically, ads are banned for promoting gambling or gaming to children too young to legally partake or for using any advertising message that promotes this same feeling. It’s not often that one gets banned because it shows nursing professionals in a bad light. It’s probably quite difficult for ad agencies to know where the line is never mind avoid crossing it.
