All Out War Between Ladbrokes And Svenska Spel

Written by: Nikola Zugic on 30/05/2008 13:00

All sorts of trouble has broken out between Ladbrokes (Operators of Ladbrokes Bingo) and Swedish operated Svenska Spel. Svenska Spel earlier this month opened court proceedings to sue Ladbrokes over the use of the phrase “Svenska Spel, Engelska Odds” in its advertising and also for the use of its logo and name. The state owned gambling operator was demanding damages of SEK1 million for each use of the phrase.

Ladbrokes has hit back with a countersuit claiming that Svenska Spel is boasting unfounded information and slandering foreign operators. In recent advertisements, the Swedish betting company has claimed “Svenska Spel is a world leader in responsible gambling” and that they are a “credible alternative to illegal activity”.

Ladbrokes argues that the reponsible gambling claim is completely unfounded as there is no proof that the company is a world leader in this area. They also claim that the use of illegal activity is referring to foreign gambling operators and that it is false and damaging. Ladbrokes counterclaim is for the exact same SEK1 million per use of these terms.

It seems this war of the words is set to continue for some time into the future and its fairly uncertain, at the present time, just who will come out on top.
