Another Bingo Club closes

Written by: Nikola Zugic on 30/04/2009 08:48

We’ve heard several Bingo Clubs in the UK being closed the past few days. Not only is this heart-breaking news due to the credit crunch but also due to the double taxation on the bingo industry, not to mention the smoking ban in Bingo Clubs. These factors have caused a lot of bingo clubs to close and that includes Cambridge’s Gala Bingo.

Next month, we are told that the Gala Hall in Cambridge area will be closing for good. A lot of loyal bingo players are saddened by the news. These bingo enthusiasts are devastated that their favorite Bingo Club is being shut down. On May 25, the bingo players will be playing their last bingo game at the Bingo Club along Hobson Street. This is certainly bad news for all of them including the bingo operators as well. Gala Bingo is the leading bingo operator of live bingo clubs in the UK but even being on top doesn’t mean they are recession proof nor they are invincible to certain regulation changes such as the increased taxes and the smoking ban.

The Gala Bingo along Hobson Street in Cambridge was once a movie house called Central Cinema. It was in the year 1972 that the cinema was converted to the bingo club that we know as Gala Bingo. However after May of this year, we’re not sure what will happen to the club. It has already been sold and who knows what will happen to it next.

There are several loyal bingo club members who are disheartened by this news. One of which is Helen Hopcraft, a fifty year old mother who has four children and lives in Chesterton. Back in the year 2006, she won a whopping twenty four thousand pounds. She’s been loyal to the club ever since. This is truly a memorable bingo club for her and she feels sorry that this had to happen.
