Another MP Shows Support to Bingo

Written by: Nikola Zugic on 30/08/2009 11:59

The UK Bingo industry has long been battling the Government over the increased bingo duties rate that was suddenly imposed last April 2009. For months, the bingo industry has been defending itself and seeking justice for the 22% bingo tax rate that has been affecting a lot of bingo halls. A lot of bingo closures have occurred over the last few months, thanks to the tax increase set out at this bad economy. It was such a bad time to increase bingo duties that much. It soared to 22% from a fair rate of 15%.

Now, the bingo industry seeks help from various officials of the Government to help them bring back the bingo tax rate to 15%, just like the rest of the gaming industries in the UK. They’ve sought help from various officials and MPs but they still lack more backups who will side with them when the decision to revert the bingo tax rate goes to a vote. Now, another MP has expressed support to the bingo industry.

It was the MP from Edinburgh West, John Barret, who has come out to vocally support the bingo operators in the UK. He has been loudly showing support to the sole gaming industry that was asked to pay a bigger tax rate. Not even the casinos were asked a whopping 22% tax. It was just the bingo industry that suffered the sudden tax increase.

The Liberal Democrat John Barret has expressed support and even signed the online petition that will be sent to the Prime Minsiter Gordon Brown. They are appealing to him to review the tax hike and revoke it as he sees fit. With the increased bingo tax rate came along the closures of a lot of bingo halls. And if this will have to continue, then bingo operators might be forced to move to Gibraltar where it is tax free to offer bingo.
