A former bingo hall in Barrhead has been found to contain asbestos cement on the ceiling and has been marked for demolition by the local council. Residents of the street on which the building is located are incensed that the council have known of the asbestos threat but they have only found out about it through talking to the specialist asbestos workers set to demolish the building in stages.
Asbestos was for many years considered the buildign material of choice because it's durable and easy to work with, while also being inexpensive. However, it has more recently been discovered that exposure to asbestos can lead to a disease called asbestosis and greatly increases the chances of contracting lung cancer. Specialist asbestos workers need to be brought in to safely remove the material.
The asbestos was found when vandals set alight to the building and since the discovery, a specialist firm have come in and submitted plans for how they will remove all of the asbestos cement from the building and complete the demolition. The building had served as a bingo hall since the 1970s and prior to this since first being built in the 1930s it was a cinema.
