Bingo and Balance

Written by: Nikola Zugic on 24/10/2007 19:00

Sometimes I wonder if I am the only person who is tired of hearing about the health issues of being over weight. Certainly there are valid points raised, but is it really necessary to harp on it until all you want to do is tell the government to go eat a carrot? Yes. Yes. Yes. I know that exercise is important and that too much time is spent in front of the computer, television and playing video games. I started walking my dog every evening and yes, I do feel better. Okay, I’ll admit that I have lost pounds. But I’m tired of hearing the lectures.

It is time, in my view, for a little balance. After all the outcry about how on line games, Bingo is my choice, are terrible for us because they are conductive to us sitting about instead doing more active things I would like to counter with the fact that your mind needs to exercise as well. I’ve read several articles on the subject with “Online Bingo Is Good For Your Health” being one of them. This confirms what I (along with others in our couch potato world) have long suspected. The mind needs to work out also and Bingo (along with other games) is a perfect vehicle.

Playing Bingo helps the brain’s reflexes since you play for a sustained length of time and the simple activities involved in playing demand that you react quickly. It sort of wakes the mind up and trains it to think at a faster pace, strengthens its memory and quickens processing time of environmental information. In short you are exercising your brain and studies show that there are benefits to be gained.

I am not saying we should forget about our bodies, but there is room for balance in the pursuit of overall health. I do enjoy walking Cassie, our golden retriever, probably as much as she enjoys seeing the outside world. Before I began the half hour ritual my muscles were sore and I tired easily. Now I smile when she sits by her leash, thumping her big tail and looking at me with her large brown eyes. “Are we going now?” The words are almost audible as she looks at me.

Yes, Cassie, we are going for a walk and then I’m going to unwind by plopping down in front of my computer and playing Bingo. The great thing is I’m going to enjoy both activities and benefit from them as well. I don’t think we should sit all day at the computer or eat an excess of sweets or something else that’s sinfully bad for us but an activity such as gaming balanced with a basically healthy diet (well, most of the time) and daily exercise can help lead to a happier person in general..

After I finish mentally running the track and maybe a few jumping jacks for good measure I’ll visit the chat room and talk to someone about life in general. I haven’t been able to unload about the silly incident at work yet today so maybe I’ll give someone a good laugh before bedtime. What’s great about most sites is you can communicate with others if you want to or just enjoy a quiet game by yourself. Whether or not you decide to throw in the added bonus of socializing your playing time is far from a waste of time. So indulge in the things you like, happiness is also a factor in achieving wellness.
