A suspected thief had set himself on fire while trying to burn his getaway car. Police think that this thief is one of the thieves who had stolen cash from Gala Bingo on Pallion New Road, Sunderland.
The thieves were wearing ski masks and dark clothing, and had stormed into the bingo hall with baseball bats. They threatened the staff before running away with the stolen money in a dark vehicle.
The staff at Gala bingo activated the alarm to alert police about the theft; and within minutes, there was news of a blazing vehicle located behind the Cornings factory. The factory is located somewhere near the vicinity of the Old Cottage pub, off Trimdom Street.
It was through CCTV footage that police found three men running from the burning wreckage, where one of them was ablaze. Detective Inspector Ron Cruikshanks said that the police thought that these three people were the same people who were involved in the bingo hall robbery as the car was also dark colored, and of the same shape.
He said that CCTV footage showed three people running from the fire, where one of them was on fire. It looked that while attempting to burn out the car, things went wrong for the thieves.
The staff at Gala bingo was shaken with the incident; however luckily no one was injured by the raiders.
