Bingo and the creative mind

Written by: Nikola Zugic on 09/11/2007 14:00

Can playing a game of Bingo change your mind?Is there any real skill involved or is it simply pure chance? What is the latest in drawing in the crowds? Is it still like it was in the past?A church hall on a Friday night. The road is quiet and evenings shadows have turned to darkness. But between the lights, a quiet procession of players shuffles towards the light.Moths to a candle, they greet each other before taking the obligatory cuppa. Whilst the hall may have been setup a hundred times before, it never quite suits the experts. They like the chairs just so, the loudspeakers aimed directly at them and of course there’s the smokers. All but gone now, they once ruled the roost. They dare not leave the room for fear of missing the call. Most now are at home, the laws which also cleared the pubs have had the same effect in the halls. Online bingo has benefited from this social change.

Some college professors have even made long term studies of the phenomena. A game of chance where the odds of winning are much in the house’s favor, with each game as random as the last, the enormity of the odds is beyond the comprehension of the player. So what keeps people ‘at it’?

There’s always that sense that it could be me. I might win! However, Dr Krauss studies have shown that there are definite benefits in playing Bingo. Time after time studies have reinforced the benefits to memory in aged players, where recall can be maintained at levels which are usually associated wit the very bright and also in chess players, the ability to recognize the patterns of numbers as opposed to the actual individual numbers themselves is also seen in chess players, they see the board as a battle field and the relative positions of pieces grants strength to a playing position.

In a well known documentary Dr Krauss followed people who styled themselves professional Bingo players around the tournaments of the world and observed them from the viewpoint of subjects in a psychological study. Noting that welfare cheques supported the Bingo habit must have caused the psychologists to wonder at the level of professionalism of the players. Nevertheless there is a cult like following of the circuit where it’s as important to be seen as it is to play well.

Indoor ‘sports’ have taken on the mantle of the physical sports such as football and basket ball. The major players are feted. However the prize money on offer shows that those who play, play for the excitement and the passion and on a good day can have great luck.
With the Bingo odds favoring the house as they do, the chance for really big tournament
wins is low.

The online industry manages to make the online games as efficient as possible to maintain interest by keeping the pace and the combinations complex. There’s a whole art in reading a position which to the uninitiated is gobbledygook. Bingo, and its derivative games lotto and Keno have been made ubiquitous in casinos and clubs with the advent of electronic draws and the ability to ensure that the games can be viewed in public spaces. So while pokies are tied to a set area these games are able to transcend the gaming space and into the public areas in total.

Where will it end?
Well that’s something that’s only limited by human imagination and when one considers how basically simple Bingo is, then there’s no reason to believe that we won’t be seeing even more creativity in the future.
