According to the legislation passed by the state House, smoking is to be banned in many workplaces of Michigan including restaurants and bars.
The bill was passed following a 56-46 majority for supporters who have been building momentum for efforts for over a decade. However this bill is not expected to go far in the Senate because most of the Republicans oppose it.
Members of the Democratic controlled House wanted bars and restaurants to be excluded from the ban while others wanted private clubs to state their own rules.
However this was not agreed upon by a majority of representatives who declared that state residents needed a broad workplace smoking ban as more citizens prefer smokefree workplaces.
The places exempt from House legislation are horse tracks, cigar bars, bingo halls, casinos and smoke shops. However the Michigan Restaurant Association and Michigan Licensed Beverage Association will continue fighting this legislation.
Those opposing the bill stated that private businessmen and women should have their limitations when making decisions on private property that could affect their endeavors.
However supporters of the legislation prove that more than half of the states so far have implemented some sort of ban on smoking in public and workplace areas.
It was U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona who released a report last year blasting second hand smoke by stating that breathing of any amount of secondhand smoke is dangerous to nonsmokers.
He called for smokefree buildings and public places as separate smoking sections and ventilation systems don’t provide any protection to nonsmokers.
