William Hill Ad For Onlie Bingo Banned

Written by: Nikola Zugic on 29/05/2008 04:00

The Advertising Standards Authority has banned a Williams Hill advertisement for their online bingo site. The regulator stated that the ban has been imposed because it shows a woman that is desperate to gamble and also keeps her addiction a secret from her family. This type of advertising is said to promote unhealthy and antisocial gambling practices.

The ad featured a woman tricking her husband into leaving for work early by winding a clock on. She then states that she gets hers as soon as her husband is out of the door – meaning her William Hill Bingo Thrill. The ad ends with the question “when will you get your William Hill bingo thrill?”

Seven complaints were received, all of them citing the fact that the advertisement depicted somebody that was quite clearly addicted to gambling and was encouraging others to take the same kinds of action.

William Hill defended the ad by saying that it is light hearted look at the woman's life and was not meant to portray anybody that was desperate to gamble of keep her gambling a secret from her husband. The ASA disagreed with William Hill's take on the ad and has banned its airing in the future.
